Growing up in Zimbabwe, the charity organisations I always saw seemed to support women weaving, herding cattle and sewing clothes. My dreams were bigger, bigger than getting a new goat or a bag of beans. I dreamt of owning a business, flying to America and changing the future for African women. When I found myself a 3rd wife, my dreams didn’t stop. I just wanted to change the future for women in Africa. 6 months ago, I took what seemed like an impossible journey. I collected laptops from friends in Canada and started  teaching woman in ZImbabwe to work online, create websites online and earn income in the currency they choose. what if our next Bill Gates came from an African woman in the village? It’s possible, 80 women, some who had never used laptops in their lives are now coding, creating websites and working on apps.

Abstract:

We examine the involvement of women entrepreneurs and managers in technology start-ups and their effects on the outcomes of start-up exits and failures. Using data on 3,743 Israeli start-ups, we find that the presence of women entrepreneurs and managers is negatively associated with the probability of exits but also of failures. We also find that increasing the numbers of both women entrepreneurs and managers in the start-up turns the effect on the probability of an exit positive but the probability of failure remains negative. We propose that the differences between women’s and men’s attitudes toward risk may explain these findings. We further suggest that for start-ups that plan exiting, employing women in a range of senior positions may be more effective than merely employing more women.

Shahin Faal

Crandall university, Moncton, NB. Canada

Keynote: A Case for Change: Address High Employee Turnover at ACME
Biography:

Shahin Faal is a student of Master of Organizational Management at Crandall University. He also has a Master of Project and Construction management from Tarbiat Modares University, Iran and a Bachelor of Architecture from Isalmic Azad University, Iran. He has more than 8 years of experience in project management in infrastructure projects like road construction, building construction and telecome projects.

Abstract:

The ACME Corporation in Moncton is a large retailer that suffers from an unusually high staff turnover for its unskilled (NOC skill level D) employees. This paper will document the proposed process of change to address the problem, using Kotter’s eight-stage analysis as detailed in his book, Leading Change (Kotter, 2012). The change process requires some significant structural changes to the ACME corporation. These include supervisors who will get better management skills and more responsibility, a bigger HR function to improve employee career building and do smarter recruitment, jobs redesigns that will ensure better fit across most job functions, and cross-unit cooperation to enable job rotation of employees. The proposed changes are hard to implement and will cost a lot of time, talent, and energy.  And success further hinges on a diligent HR role with increased responsibility. But the benefits of the employee retention plan outweigh the cost significantly. A good employment reputation for ACME will also mean that more and better-quality applications will be received for job openings.  Experienced employees will also require less instruction and oversight from supervisors which allows for better scaling of team production. Lastly, having more time will allow trust relationships to form and boost teamwork and team spirit. All these benefits will result in more profit for ACME shareholders.  However, these benefits are dependent on the successful change implementation of the employee retention program.
