Title: Future of Entrepreneurship in the 4th Industrial Revolution
Biography:

Abstract:

The world of work is going through a prolonged period of uncertainty. Structural changes to our economy are superimposed by technological advancements allied with the 4th industrial revolution. These changes affect us all, but especially the young who are getting ready to enter the labor market in a globalized but increasingly uncertain market economy. This paper focuses on the future of entrepreneurship in the 4th industrial revolution and explores opportunities available to Millennials and Generation Z. It aims to understand how new generations may harness the power of entrepreneurship to navigate through the 4th Industrial Revolution. The paper is based on a thematic inquiry and interview data derived from a recent study with University graduates. Interviews enabled deep meanings to be drawn out of the rich experiences of graduates who wanted to start a business, where some had succeeded but others had not. Conclusions were drawn from contextual interpretations of participants and the way they organized their experiences. Entrepreneurship is presented, not just as a viable career option, but also as a lifestyle choice and an avenue for self-actualization for new generations. In doing so this paper distinguishes technological advancements as expected metamorphic developments of the 3rd Industrial revolution and suggest that social change and the transformation of individual economic actors is at the core of the 4th industrial revolution.

Biography:

Craig Dunkerley is an international #1 best-selling author and speaker. As CEO and founder of Blackthorn Group, he has made it his mission to help as many Canadians as possible become millionaires. He is a financial expert and his firm focuses on reducing taxes of people, entrepreneurs, small business owners, and corporations. He is a true Tax and Investment Guru and will change your mind set on how you look at expenses and teach you how to write off almost everything you spend, just like the wealthy do. Start putting large refunds in your pocket year after year. It’s how much you ‘keep’ that counts! From there he will show you how to take this free money, the money you were giving away and make it work for you, not the bank, not the government, for you.

Abstract:

The presentation provides real-life stories, examples, and anecdotes of the financial challenges of most Canadians and how some simple shifts can overcome them and create positive change that not only brings more wealth but creates financial freedom. Do not expect typical financial discussions. Expect out of the box thinking and strategies that your bank will not share with you, legitimate and legal strategies to put tax dollars back in your pocket and get your money working for you. See how easy it is to put more money in your pocket and generate generational wealth. After choosing at the age of 32 to leave the corporate world and successful career behind, Craig turned his part-time accounting business into a full-time firm. As an entrepreneur since he was 12-years old, he was now ready to do it full time and share his knowledge with others, taking control of his life for himself and his family. Purchasing his first real estate rental property at 23 years old and building it into a real estate empire for himself and others, he will show you the power of duplication. Looking at the minimalist results so many were getting in their RRSPs, in 2001 he started teaching how self-directing low fee funds could keep 60 to 70% of the gains in your account as opposed to your banks’ profits. He will share this information with you. He was fortunate as a child having his father share his knowledge of money and numbers with him. He knew everything from an early age for the finances of the family and the household. As an analytic, he started to challenge many of the financial numbers and results he saw early on and built strategies to improve them. This has led to further development of strategies for financial freedom and helping people get connected with their money and creating personal wealth for them. With stories interwoven, the presentation will provide 3 strategies of how to live a financially free lifestyle. The audience will gain insights into strategies to write off almost everything they spend to generate large tax refunds, how this “free money” (Money you were letting slip through your fingertips) can build wealth. How a couple of very simple changes to their investments can add 60 to 70% more to their current gains and how easy it is to take control of your money, get connected with it and make it work harder for you. It’s what you do not know that’s hurting you and with a little bit of connection, everything can change.

Biography:

Anne Berthinier-Poncet holds a Ph.D. in Strategic Management and is currently an Associate Professor at the CNAM Paris, France, a lifelong learning university, where she teaches innovation management to professionals (evening classes at master’s level, MBA and corporate training seminars). Alongside her teaching activities, she undertakes academic research in management, in the field of innovation and territorial embeddedness. Her main research topics are focused on the management of collaborative innovation in innovation ecosystems. She studied the governance and dynamics of innovation clusters (technopoles, competitiveness clusters), “third-spaces” (fab labs and coworking spaces), as well as innovation communities. She concentrates her research on SMEs and their abilities to develop open and collaborative innovation. Her latest research deals with the outdoor sports industry and the link between innovation management and specific territorial anchorage (“playing field”), in France, Canada, and Italy.

Abstract:

Although the notion of the ecosystem has become very popular in the field of innovation management and entrepreneurship (for industrials, academics and government as well), it still encompasses a large variety of different perspectives. Following Spiegel (2017:50), we define an innovation ecosystem in relation to entrepreneurship as “the combination of social, political, economic, and cultural elements within a region that support the development and growth of innovative startups and encourage nascent entrepreneurs and other actors to take the risks of starting, funding, and otherwise assisting high-risk ventures”. Entrepreneurship is tightly linked to the notion of the ecosystem as the development, the success but also the failure of new ventures not only depend on the company’s assets but also on its external partners and networks. Entrepreneurial dynamics often involve a collective work, "created not by "an" entrepreneur but by a team of entrepreneurs" (Vieira Borges et al., 2003, p.13) and strongly rely on the interactions between the different actors of the ecosystem: from formal actors (political institutions, large firms, universities, research labs, innovation intermediaries, clusters) to informal ones (innovation communities). In return, entrepreneurial dynamics are at the heart of the renewal of innovation ecosystems. Entrepreneurial dynamics and innovation ecosystem are indeed two concepts closely linked. However, research on the topic is still underdeveloped, in particular in looking more precisely at the processes through which innovation ecosystems deliver benefits to entrepreneurs and start-ups: how they encourage the creation of high-quality ventures and give these firms some sort of competitive advantage that helps them grow and thrive (Spiegel & Harrison, 2018). The question of strategy then arises differently for entrepreneurs (Iansiti & Levien, 2004; Teece, 2007), and with it the question of finding the best sustainable environment for new venturing (Porter, 2003). It is not just about positioning oneself in a competitive environment to capture value, but also about acting on that environment, as an actor engaged in a process of value co-creation (Adner, 2006; Adner & Kapoor, 2010). If the central role of the interactions between the actors within an ecosystem led to the development of different works integrating the question of the geographical proximity of the actors, it also highlighted the territorial dimension of the entrepreneurial dynamics within ecosystems of innovation (Gertler et al. 2000).

Biography:

Calvin Wayman is a guy with an unconventional background. He actually comes from a large polygamous family. He grew up with one dad, four moms (yup, FOUR), and forty-four siblings! Three years ago, he quit his day job, transformed multiple areas of his life, and documented everything along the way. Today, he is a best-selling author ("Fish Out of Water"), TEDx Speaker, and has shared the stage with fellow groundbreakers including Brendon Burchard, Mel Robbins, Lewis Howes, and Jay Shetty. His journey has taken him from a cloistered upbringing in Utah, through debt and poor health, to self-actualized prosperity. In sharing his journey, he paints a vivid picture. Through all of his heartbreak, fear, and struggle are moments and feelings that you’ll recognize in your own journey. In his personal transformation, you’ll find lessons and strategies for building your own version of your best self.

Abstract:

Imagine being born into a family so large that the number one question people ask you is: “do you remember all of your siblings’ names?” Calvin Wayman grew up in a strict fundamentalist religion—he had 1 dad, 4 moms, and 44 brothers and sisters. Let’s face it. Entrepreneurs are often the weird, awkward, “crazy ones” that don’t fit in. And being 1 in a family of 50, Calvin Wayman felt that “out of place” feeling all too well. He grew up on a family farm but knew that he was destined for more. After never stepping foot inside a public school, he ultimately left everything he ever knew to pursue his dream of being an entrepreneur and making his mark on the world. This remarkable story shows that you can turn your biggest obstacles and can turn that into your greatest opportunity.

Abstract:

E-wallets have emerged as the most significant contributor in pushing cashless and electronic payments. The surge of smartphones and internet connectivity of 3G and 4G is reflected in the robust growth of mobile-wallets in India. The Indian market is still a cash-dominated market but if anything has managed to decrease that even a little, it has been the rise of mobile payments through the use of e-wallets like Paytm, Quikwallet, Tez, Mobikwik, etc. There was a need for quick, cashless and traceable transactions in the Indian system, e-wallets enabled this by being linked to the biometric details of the people through their Unique Aadhar number along with their mobile number and other key bank details. The consumer perception of digital payment has a significant and positive impact on the adoption of digital payment. The present paper focuses on the analysis of the adoption level of these digital payment systems by customers. This paper also throws light on issues like the impact of demonetization decision on preference for online payments, the impact of various demographic factors on the usage of e-wallets & problems faced while using e-wallets.

The aim is to suggest a tool to create value creating products presenting the Thai identity in each community.

Communities in Burirum and Krabi provinces in Thailand were selected for the dedicated team consisting of community members, young entrepreneur, young designers, and professional designers to conduct an experimental research. Community Asset Boards (CAB) were used in the creative workshops aimed to develop value creation prototypes of products and brands that are ready for the commercialized process. One of the prototype products have been put into the commercialized process and launched as POUKA brand by the designer of Voraraj Bangkok Brand.

Abstract:

Research has found that 49% of entrepreneurs are dealing with at least one mental illness. Psychologists agree that creative individuals are more genetically predisposed to mental illness, and it’s clear that creative people often go on to become entrepreneurs. When first starting out, virtually every entrepreneur I know has suffered from an insecurity complex of sorts. Yes, you’re running a business, but it doesn’t feel like a real business because you find yourself staring at your CEO, board of directors and staff while you’re brushing your teeth in the morning and walk past your "world headquarters" as you make your way back to your bedroom to get dressed. When you’re a business of one (or two or three), it’s hard to avoid that stomach-churning anxiety. So what can we do? How can we manage our own human emotions while also attempting to achieve big dreams and conquer massive goals? And more importantly, why is it that I believe, the journey of the entrepreneur can be one of the most effective paths to discovering who you really are? Instead of looking at how we can push that fear aside or hide it way– I want to try and empower you to embrace the worries, insecurities, and doubt and learn how to use that energy for positive results.

Jessica Cassick

CEO & Co-Founder of ImagineWe, LLC & Synergy Services Alliance

Title: Creativity and Entrepreneurship: From Social Services to SUCCESS
Biography:

Jessica Cassick is a Ph.D. student at the University of the Virgin Islands and pursues a doctorate in Creative Leadership for Innovation and Change. She is the CEO of ImagineWe, LLC, a publishing company. She is Co-Founder of Synergy Services Alliance, a soon to be nonprofit that consults and teaches survivors of domestic violence to create a positive change movement to graduate from the welfare system, in pursuit of financial independence, and success. She has published 10 children’s books, with 3 more on the way and will launch of 2 businesses in 2019. She specializes in entrepreneurship, communication, creativity, domestic violence, and is pursuing a more elaborate knowledge of success for her dissertation.

Abstract:

Examine creativity through the lens of entrepreneurship. Like creativity, entrepreneurship can have many definitions, but in one reading, Jeffrey Nytch (2016) described it as a mindset. Nytch explains this mindset as steps in a process. First, you will recognize the opportunity in front of you, then focus on the issue, remain flexible and adaptable, and identify resources. This to me, appeared to be similar to Creative Problem Solving. When creativity collides with entrepreneurship, learning to balance in opposition to struggles, as well as always finding new and exciting ways to redevelop and restructure a business to stay ahead of the curve is pivotal to having a business. This can also be said about creativity. Creativity is omnipresent. “Each of us does have an Aladdin’s lamp, and if we rub it hard enough, it can light our way to better living — just as that same lamp lit up the march of civilization”(Osborn, 1952b, p. 8). Creativity can be harnessed and used like a missile or a cannon during a war.
The potential alone to create opportunity is infinite. Where their potential, there needs to exist an action and then we have change. With the unlimited change that needs to happen, every single individual has a part they must be willing to play to make an impact. Through entrepreneurship, it can take a Domestic Violence victim or survivor from poverty to plenty, from social services to success, and from minimum wage to Chief Executive Officer.

Abstract:

A recent research work conducted in the Bank of Italy analyzed the relationship between the slowdown in economic activity in Italy in the years of the crisis - from 2008 to 2011 – e the intensification of criminal incidents. The results show that the economic crisis had an impact only on certain types of criminal activities, ie on property and financial offenses especially on those who do not require particular criminal abilities, such as theft. In line with the recent European directives, economic crimes must be combated by pursuing both the objective of law enforcement and that of economic development. A balanced strategy of prevention and suppression must be found upon rules that lay down clearly formulated obligations; that avoid intrusive instruments and rigid procedures; that do not overburden honest businesses; that institute mechanism of enforcement and sanctions that are swift, effective and proportionate to the seriousness of the infractions; that provide incentives for intermediaries to collaborate with the structures that fight money laundering; and, in conclusion, that strengthen domestic and International cooperation among authorities.

“Each of us does have an Aladdin’s lamp, and if we rub it hard enough, it can light our way to better living, just as that same lamp lit up the march of civilization”(Osborn, 1952b, p. 8). Creativity can be harnessed and used as a missile or cannon during a war. The potential alone to create opportunity is infinite. Where their potential there needs to exist an action and then we have changed. With the unlimited change that needs to happen, every single individual has a part they must be willing to play to make an impact. Through entrepreneurship, it can take a domestic violence victim or survivor from poverty to plenty, from social services to success, and from minimum wage to Chief Executive Officer.

Abstract:

Do you have a business roadmap? The entrepreneurship journey is one that takes the owner through a lot of hills and thrills. It takes you across a lot of mucky waters which if not anticipated and deftly maneuvered, may lead to frustration and eventual jettison of the journey. One of the full proof tools that help to anchor business owners and end entrepreneurs through this vagaries, is having a clear roadmap. Your business plan is not enough to anchor your business execution. Most of the time you need a roadmap document especially if your business is in a state of flux with changing market conditions, changing supply model, startup challenges, etc. To avoid pursuing many windy paths or dead ends in 2019, it is always good to have a roadmap. That roadmap encapsulates the path to the vision with pillars and enablers which team members can understand. Business leaders and practitioners need a framework for guiding the mobilization of an organization around its strategic plan. Such a roadmap enables leaders and members to clearly understand each element for rolling out a strategy. It details what decisions need to be made, who needs to make them and when. A roadmap enables everyone in the business to clearly understand each action and what decisions need to be made, who needs to make them and when such decisions should be executed.

Abstract:

I come from the country of Elon Musk, Mark Shuttle worth, and Trevor Noah! I come from the country of Nelson Mandela. We do like to share with the world what we are doing, trying to do, or what we are striving for. A country of experiments, especially in the social context, of victories, and many failures. You’ll need a special insight into the effect and implications of a mindset often formed by a culture of dependency. The Long Walk Project was “a gift to the mindset of all South Africans” and I trust it can also be a gift to the GEC 2019. My work in South Africa has many facets. What conclusions can I draw from all of my experiences and research? In summary: As South Africans, we need to reboot our entire approach towards entrepreneurial skills development.

1. Why is this reboot necessary?

2. How will we reboot our mindset?

3. How is Street Biz planning for the future?
